Disease description:

My own blood lipid levels are relatively high. My doctor mentioned that I need to pay more attention to regulation and management. I would like to ask the doctor, what are the potential risks associated with high blood lipid levels?

Doctor's answer (1)
Dr. Liu Feng

Elevated blood lipids refer to abnormally high levels of lipids in the blood, such as cholesterol and triglycerides, which may pose various health risks.

1. High cholesterol: Abnormal blood lipids can lead to increased levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in the blood. This type of cholesterol is closely associated with the risk of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a process in which the arterial walls gradually thicken and harden, potentially leading to vascular narrowing or blockage and triggering cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases such as angina, myocardial infarction, and stroke.

2. High triglycerides: Abnormal blood lipids can also cause elevated triglyceride levels, which increases the risk of insulin resistance and promotes the development and progression of diabetes. High triglycerides are also associated with lipid metabolism disorders such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

3. Burden on the cardiovascular system: Abnormal blood lipids increase the burden on the heart and vascular system, making it harder for the heart to pump blood effectively and accelerating the aging and hardening of blood vessels, further increasing the risk of cardiovascular events.

Individuals diagnosed with abnormal blood lipids are advised to regularly monitor their lipid levels and follow medical advice for lifestyle management and pharmacological treatment.
