My father used to really enjoy eating hyacinth beans. However, since developing gout, he has had to avoid many foods, and hasn't eaten hyacinth beans anymore. I would like to ask, can people with gout still eat hyacinth beans?

Dr. Yang Ziqi
Patients with gout can consume small amounts of hyacinth bean during the stable phase of their condition, but should pay attention to controlling the intake and the stage of the disease. Hyacinth bean, as a moderate-purine food, has a relatively high purine content among vegetables; however, its purine components are not easily absorbed by the human body and have no direct correlation with the occurrence of gouty arthritis or elevated uric acid levels. Therefore, during the non-acute phase of gout, moderate consumption of hyacinth bean is generally safe and will not significantly affect the condition. Patients should control the amount of hyacinth bean consumed to avoid excessive intake that may cause fluctuations in uric acid levels. Moreover, during an acute gout attack, patients should strictly limit consumption of high-purine foods, including hyacinth beans, to prevent worsening of the condition. At the same time, patients should follow the principle of a low-purine diet and consume more low-purine foods, such as fresh vegetables and fruits, to maintain overall health.
