Causes of Inattention
Disease description:
My child's teacher says that he has trouble concentrating in class and seems somewhat distracted. Doctor, what are the possible causes of inattention?
Inattention, commonly referred to as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), can result from multiple factors.
1. Sleep deprivation: If a patient frequently stays up late and suffers from chronic sleep deprivation, the brain may remain in a state of excessive fatigue for prolonged periods, leading to neurological dysfunction, which may cause inattention.
2. Lack of interest or motivation: If a patient lacks interest or motivation in the tasks at hand, inattention may easily occur.
3. Environmental distractions: A patient's attention may be easily disturbed by environmental factors, such as loud music, television, mobile phones, other electronic entertainment devices, or people talking or laughing nearby, all of which may lead to inattention.
4. Neurasthenia: Neurasthenia is a psychological disorder typically characterized by weakness in cerebral and physical functions following prolonged stress and pressure. Patients experiencing excessive mental strain and emotional tension over long periods may develop inattention.
5. Cerebral hypoperfusion: Thickening of blood vessel walls and narrowing of the vascular lumen can slow blood flow, resulting in insufficient blood and oxygen supply to brain tissue, which may lead to inattention.
