Elevated uric acid levels, known as hyperuricemia, are primarily caused by abnormal purine metabolism in the body. When excessive purine is produced or excretion is reduced, uric acid levels can rise.

1. Excessive purine intake: Regular consumption of high-purine foods, such as organ meats, seafood, and meat products, can increase uric acid production in the body.

2. Lifestyle factors: Obesity and lack of physical activity can lead to excess body fat, which may trigger metabolic disorders. These metabolic abnormalities can indirectly affect uric acid metabolism and excretion.

3. Impaired renal excretion: The kidneys are the primary organs responsible for uric acid excretion. Renal insufficiency or certain medications that affect uric acid excretion, such as kidney diseases (e.g., nephritis, hydronephrosis), may lead to reduced uric acid excretion.

4. Other medical conditions: Hyperuricemia, gout, and hematologic disorders (e.g., leukemia, anemia) can all cause elevated uric acid levels.

5. Congenital factors: Some patients have a deficiency in specific enzymes, leading to abnormal purine synthesis or breakdown due to enzyme defects. This results in congenital purine metabolism disorders and subsequently elevated uric acid levels.
