How to reduce foot swelling quickly
After sitting for a long time, my feet become slightly swollen. What is the fastest way to reduce the swelling?

Foot swelling can be caused by various factors including prolonged standing or sitting, excessive physical activity, injury, varicose veins, lymphatic system issues, heart disease, kidney disease, and medication side effects. Common methods for quickly reducing swelling:
1. Elevate the affected limb: Raise the affected limb above heart level to help venous blood return and reduce swelling. Pillows or cushions can be used to support the limb.
2. Cold and hot compresses: During the initial phase of injury (within 24 hours), use a cold compress such as an ice pack or cold towel to reduce local congestion and pain. After 24 hours, switch to a hot compress, such as a warm towel or hot water bottle, to promote blood circulation and reduce swelling.
3. Appropriate exercise: Perform mild ankle rotations and leg stretching exercises to improve blood circulation and aid in reducing swelling. Avoid prolonged sitting or standing still.
4. Wear comfortable shoes: Avoid high heels or tight-fitting shoes; choose well-fitting shoes with good support.
5. Massage: Gently massage the swollen area from the distal to the proximal direction—that is, from the toes toward the knee—to help promote lymphatic and blood flow.
If the above measures fail to effectively relieve swelling or if severe pain occurs, it is recommended to seek medical examination at a hospital immediately.
