I noticed that my urine was more yellow than usual and had a foamy appearance when I went to the bathroom these days. Could you please explain what might be causing this?

Dr. Cao Zhiqiang

Under normal circumstances, urine color ranges from light yellow to amber, primarily depending on the concentration of urochrome in the urine and the degree of urine concentration. When urine appears darker yellow, there may be several possible causes:

1. Inadequate water intake: When the body receives insufficient water, urine becomes concentrated, increasing the proportion of urochrome in the urine, thus making the urine appear yellow.

2. Urinary tract infection: When the urinary system is infected by bacteria or other pathogenic microorganisms, it can cause a urinary tract infection, leading to an increase in bacteria and their metabolic products in the urine, thereby altering the color and odor of the urine.

3. Food influence: Certain foods contain yellow pigments or metabolic byproducts that, when excreted through the kidneys, can cause the urine to appear yellow. For example, consuming large amounts of foods rich in beta-carotene, such as carrots and beets, may temporarily change the color of urine.

4. Diseases: Liver diseases (such as hepatitis), bile duct obstruction, hemolytic diseases, and others may also lead to darker urine color.

If concerned, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly.
