Disease description:

My wife says she hasn't become pregnant, and I have started to wonder whether there might be something wrong with me. I am planning to undergo an examination and would like to ask: how many days of abstinence are required before a semen quality test?

Dr. Cao Zhiqiang

When checking sperm quality, men are usually advised to abstain from ejaculation for 2 to 7 days before the examination.

A too short period of abstinence may result in a lower sperm count in the semen, failing to fully reflect the testes' sperm-producing function; conversely, excessive abstinence may cause sperm aging and reduced motility, which also fails to accurately represent the actual condition of the sperm.

During this period of abstinence, all forms of sexual stimulation, including masturbation, nocturnal emissions, and sexual intercourse, should be strictly avoided.

In addition, during the abstinence period, any medications or substances that may affect sperm quality, such as antibiotics, alcohol, and tobacco, should be avoided. Maintaining healthy lifestyle habits, such as regular sleep patterns, a balanced diet, and moderate exercise, can also help improve sperm quality.
