What should I do if I sprain my ankle?
I accidentally sprained my ankle, and now it's painful and swollen. I'm really anxious about it. I'd like to ask, what should I do after spraining an ankle?

Ankle sprain is a common sports injury, often caused by a sudden twist or excessive extension of the ankle joint while bearing body weight. After a sprain occurs, the following measures can be taken:
1. Rest: Immediately stop all activities that may worsen the injury. Do not stand or walk, and avoid putting further strain on the ankle.
2. Ice: Apply an ice pack or cold compress to the injured area for 15 to 20 minutes, three to four times a day, to help reduce swelling and pain. However, do not place ice directly on the skin to prevent frostbite.
3. Compression: Apply moderate pressure to the ankle using an elastic bandage or compression sock to help reduce swelling. However, avoid wrapping the bandage too tightly, as it may impair blood circulation.
4. Elevation: Try to keep the foot elevated above the level of the heart to reduce blood flow to the injured area and thus minimize swelling.
If the pain is severe, the swelling is significant, weight-bearing is impossible, or there is noticeable deformity or inability to move the ankle, seek medical attention immediately, as there may be a fracture or a severe sprain.
