Dr. Shen Yonghua

Patients with erosive gastritis can drink honey water in moderation.

Erosive gastritis is a condition characterized by inflammation and erosion of the gastric mucosa; patients often have a sensitive stomach that is easily irritated. Honey, as a natural food, contains abundant sugars, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which have certain antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Its mild nature may also aid in the repair of the gastric mucosa.

However, the high sugar content in honey might stimulate gastric acid secretion. For patients with excessive gastric acid or significant gastric mucosal damage, excessive honey consumption could worsen symptoms. Honey water should not be consumed in large quantities and should be taken with warm water; hot water should be avoided as it may irritate the gastric mucosa.

If symptoms of erosive gastritis are severe, such as the presence of bleeding or vomiting, patients should temporarily avoid drinking honey water to prevent exacerbation of symptoms.
