Hallux valgus, commonly known as "bunion," is a common foot deformity primarily characterized by a lateral deviation of the first metatarsophalangeal joint, resulting in a protruding bone spur.

Common treatment methods:

1. Lifestyle modifications: Avoid wearing high-heeled or pointed-toe shoes; choose wide and comfortable footwear to reduce pressure on the feet.

2. Physical therapy: Utilize physical methods such as heat application and massage to improve local blood circulation and reduce inflammation and pain.

3. Orthotic devices: Use arch supports or orthopedic insoles to help correct foot posture and prevent further progression of hallux valgus.

4. Medication: Oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, can be used to reduce inflammation and pain and alleviate symptoms of bursitis.

5. Surgical treatment: Patients with moderate to severe hallux valgus or those who do not respond to nonsurgical treatments may be candidates for surgery. Surgical options include soft tissue procedures, bony procedures, or combined approaches. Soft tissue surgery primarily corrects soft tissue imbalance, such as releasing or shortening the flexor hallucis longus tendon. Bony surgery involves osteotomy or joint fusion to realign the bone structure and restore normal foot shape and function.

Medication should be taken under the guidance of a qualified physician.
