What Are the Causes of Periumbilical Pain in Children?
My child has been complaining of stomach pain these past few days, specifically around the belly button area, and seems quite uncomfortable. As a parent, I'm very concerned. I'd like to ask, what are the possible causes of periumbilical pain in children?

Children's abdominal pain around the navel can have various causes, and the following are some common ones:
1. Functional abdominal pain: This is one of the most common causes of abdominal pain in children, usually related to gastrointestinal dysfunction, such as abnormal intestinal motility or increased sensitivity to food. This type of pain typically has no obvious organic lesions and is often associated with emotional and stress factors.
2. Gastrointestinal infections: These may be caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites. Common symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
3. Appendicitis: A significant cause of acute abdominal pain in children, the initial pain often starts around the navel and gradually shifts to the lower right abdomen. Associated symptoms may include fever, nausea, and vomiting.
4. Intussusception: Common in infants and young children, it occurs when one segment of the intestine slides into another. Main symptoms include paroxysmal severe abdominal pain, vomiting, bloody stools, and an abdominal mass.
When children exhibit such symptoms, it is important to observe whether they have other accompanying discomforts and to seek timely medical evaluation.
