Disease description:

Recently, my heel has been experiencing a dull ache, especially when I first get out of bed in the morning, at which time the pain is more severe. Walking for extended periods also worsens the pain. What could be causing this? Can heel pain be caused by bone spurs?

Heel pain is commonly associated with the following conditions:

1. Plantar fasciitis: This is a common cause of heel pain, especially prevalent among individuals who stand or walk frequently. Prolonged standing or walking increases tension on the plantar fascia, leading to inflammation and pain.

2. Achilles tendinitis: The Achilles tendon is a strong, band-like tissue connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. Overuse, a sudden increase in physical activity, or wearing improper footwear can cause inflammation of the Achilles tendon, resulting in pain.

3. Nerve entrapment around the heel bone: When nerves pass around the heel bone, they may become compressed. This can cause symptoms such as pain and numbness. Compression may be caused by tendons, ligaments, bones, bone spurs, or fatty tissue around the heel bone.

4. Heel spurs: Long-term plantar fasciitis may lead to calcium deposits forming on the heel bone, creating heel spurs. Although the heel spur itself may not necessarily cause pain, associated inflammation and tissue damage can result in discomfort.

5. Fat pad disorders: The fat pad is a fibrofatty cushion beneath the heel. With aging or increased physical activity, its internal structure may become damaged, causing pain. This condition is more common among elderly individuals and athletes.
