My grandfather has recently been taking traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), but he really enjoys drinking tea. I would like to ask whether it is advisable to drink tea while taking TCM?

Dr. Zhang Xiuhong

During the period of taking traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), it is generally not recommended to drink tea simultaneously. TCM formulations are complex and often contain various herbs; the active ingredients in these herbs may interact with substances in tea such as tannic acid and caffeine, forming precipitates that are difficult for the body to absorb. This not only reduces the effectiveness of the TCM but may also irritate the gastrointestinal tract and cause discomfort. Additionally, the caffeine in tea has a stimulating effect on the nervous system and may counteract the effects of certain TCM remedies that are intended to calm the mind and promote relaxation, thereby reducing their therapeutic effectiveness. Therefore, to ensure TCM can exert its full therapeutic effect and avoid unnecessary health risks, it is advisable to refrain from drinking tea while taking TCM.

Patients should primarily drink plain boiled water while taking TCM, and avoid beverages containing caffeine, tannic acid, or other substances that may interfere with drug efficacy. If one has a habit of drinking tea, it may be acceptable to drink a small amount of weak tea two to three hours after taking the medication, to minimize interference with drug absorption. At the same time, maintaining healthy lifestyle habits and a balanced diet, and avoiding excessively greasy, spicy, or cold foods can help enhance the therapeutic effects of TCM.
