Disease description:

My son is 3 months old and has developed a cough. We are unsure whether this might be an early symptom of infant pneumonia. Could you please tell me what are the early symptoms of pneumonia in infants?

Doctor's answer (1)
Dr. Zhou Xiaofeng

Early symptoms of infantile pneumonia include fever, cough, rapid breathing, cyanosis around the mouth, and poor mental status.

1. Fever: Infants with pneumonia usually develop fever, with body temperature reaching 38℃-39℃, or even higher.

2. Cough: The cough is usually severe, possibly presenting as paroxysmal coughing, and progressively worsens. Coughing may be accompanied by sputum production.

3. Rapid breathing: Pneumonia affects the infant's normal respiratory function, causing tachypnea. The respiratory rate significantly increases, and the depth of breathing also increases.

4. Cyanosis around the mouth: Due to impaired lung function, infants may experience early hypoxia symptoms manifested as cyanosis around the mouth or bluish discoloration of the lips.

5. Poor mental status: Infants with pneumonia may exhibit neurological symptoms such as irritability, drowsiness, or coma.

Parents should closely monitor the infant's physical condition. If these abnormal symptoms appear, they should promptly take the infant to see a doctor for appropriate medical evaluation and treatment.
