Disease description:

I recently found out during a physical examination that my blood potassium level was a bit low. My doctor prescribed potassium chloride for me. I would like to ask, what is the main function of this medication?

Dr. Yang Ziqi

Potassium is the primary intracellular cation and is important for maintaining normal neuromuscular function, myocardial stability, and osmotic pressure balance between intra- and extracellular fluids. Potassium chloride can replenish potassium ions in the body and is used for the prevention and treatment of hypokalemia.

In certain situations, such as cardiac disorders including arrhythmia and myocardial infarction, appropriate potassium levels help stabilize myocardial electrophysiological properties and reduce the occurrence of abnormal heart rhythms. Potassium chloride can also be administered intravenously to replenish potassium ions in body fluids, especially in situations such as surgery, trauma, and burns, where patients often experience potassium loss. In these cases, potassium supplementation becomes particularly important.

Potassium chloride can also be used as an antidote in cases of drug intoxication, helping to promote the elimination of toxins from the body. Adequate potassium intake is considered to have a positive effect on lowering blood pressure; therefore, potassium chloride also has application value in the dietary management of some patients with hypertension. Potassium chloride should be used with caution, particularly in patients with renal insufficiency, as excessive intake may lead to hyperkalemia. Therefore, it should be used rationally under medical supervision.
