Dr. Chen Jian

Pain on the top of the foot may be caused by overuse, trauma, tendonitis or tenosynovitis, arch problems, nerve compression, and other reasons.

1. Overuse: Prolonged standing, walking, or engaging in high-intensity exercise, especially while wearing improper footwear, can overwork the muscles and tendons on the top of the foot, leading to pain.

2. Trauma: Injuries to the top of the foot such as sprains, bruises, crush injuries, or impact injuries may cause local soft tissue damage, fractures, or dislocations, resulting in pain.

3. Tendonitis or Tenosynovitis: Conditions such as anterior tibial tendonitis or inflammation of the foot tendon sheaths can result from overuse or injury to the muscles or tendons, causing inflammation and pain.

4. Arch Problems: Foot arch issues such as flat feet or high arches can place abnormal pressure on the muscles and bones of the top of the foot, leading to pain.

5. Nerve Compression: Nerves on the top of the foot may become compressed due to tight shoes or prolonged wearing of high heels, causing pain.

During episodes of foot top pain, excessive use of the foot should be avoided, and appropriate rest is recommended to alleviate discomfort. Massage and stretching exercises may help improve blood circulation and promote muscle relaxation.
