I’ve just given birth, and a nurse immediately asked me whether I’d like to store my baby’s umbilical cord blood. Is storing cord blood after childbirth beneficial?

Storing umbilical cord blood after childbirth has certain clinical benefits. Cord blood contains a relatively high concentration of hematopoietic stem cells; if the child later develops leukemia, these stored stem cells can be used for autologous transplantation—avoiding the need for donor-derived stem cells—and may achieve therapeutic effects. Additionally, cord blood stem cells hold potential for treating certain congenital heart diseases. However, cord blood must be processed and stored in a certified medical facility; improper storage elsewhere may lead to contamination or infection.
