What Are the Causes of a Small Fontanelle in Newborns?
Disease description:
I feel that my baby’s fontanelle is somewhat small. What are the causes of a small fontanelle in newborns?
A small fontanelle in newborns is most commonly caused by congenital factors. If the infant experienced intrauterine infection or birth asphyxia with hypoxia at delivery, it may result in brain injury, leading to a small fontanelle. Abnormal development of the skull bones can also cause this finding. Additionally, conditions such as cerebral atrophy cannot be ruled out as potential causes.
