I am currently 34 weeks pregnant. How can I tell if the baby has engaged (descended into the pelvis)? What sensations might I experience when this occurs?

Hello! When the fetus engages (i.e., the fetal head descends into the maternal pelvis), you may notice a sensation of heaviness or “dropping” in your abdomen. Engagement is a precursor to labor, and after engagement, you may observe changes in the shape of your pregnant belly. Additionally, as the baby descends, pressure on the stomach gradually decreases, often leading to improved appetite following engagement. However, you may subsequently experience symptoms such as increased urinary frequency, constipation, and a feeling of pressure or fullness at the cervix.
