Introduction
Laser surgery for myopia is highly effective. Common laser procedures for myopia include excimer laser surgery and femtosecond laser surgery, both of which artificially modify the cornea’s refractive state to improve corrected visual acuity. Due to its minimal invasiveness and rapid recovery, this surgery has been widely adopted in clinical practice and generally yields favorable outcomes. It can effectively enhance corrected vision, enabling patients to achieve spectacle independence.

Generally speaking, the surgical procedure is equivalent to creating a concave lens on the cornea to correct vision. Femtosecond laser surgery primarily uses laser-induced photodisruption to precisely sculpt a lenticular shape between corneal layers, thereby correcting myopia. So, is laser surgery for myopia truly effective and safe?

Is Laser Surgery for Myopia Truly Effective and Safe?

Laser surgery for myopia is generally considered highly effective. Common procedures include excimer laser surgery (e.g., LASIK, PRK) and femtosecond laser-assisted surgery (e.g., SMILE), both of which artificially modify the cornea’s refractive power to improve corrected visual acuity. Due to its minimal invasiveness and rapid recovery, this surgery has been widely adopted in clinical practice, with consistently favorable outcomes—effectively enhancing corrected vision and enabling patients to discontinue dependence on glasses or contact lenses. However, as an invasive procedure, it carries a small risk of rare complications, including overcorrection, undercorrection, corneal stromal debris, neurotrophic epitheliopathy, diffuse lamellar keratitis (DLK), infectious keratitis, and progressive corneal ectasia.

With proper postoperative care, most patients gradually regain normal visual function. For example, stand at a fixed location and alternately focus on a nearby tree and a distant tree—observing each for several seconds. This exercise helps regulate and relax the ciliary muscles while encouraging detailed visual scrutiny of the trees. Alternatively, rub your palms together until warm, then gently cup them over your closed eyes and repeat this process several times.

In daily life, patients are encouraged to maintain a positive mindset and actively cooperate with their physicians during treatment. Adhering strictly to prescribed medication regimens—including correct dosage and timing—and diligently observing routine postoperative care measures can significantly accelerate clinical improvement.
