What should I do if my stomach feels uncomfortable after drinking a cold beverage?
Generally, stomach discomfort caused by drinking cold beverages can be improved through dietary adjustments, applying heat to the abdomen, or using medications.
1. Dietary Adjustment
Individuals experiencing stomach discomfort after consuming cold drinks should avoid cold, spicy, and irritating foods such as ice cream, pepper, and ginger. Instead, they should focus on light and easily digestible foods like millet porridge, noodles, and steamed buns. These foods do not burden the gastrointestinal tract and drinking more warm water may also help relieve symptoms.
2. Applying Heat to the Abdomen
If symptoms are mild, applying a warm towel or hot water bottle to the abdomen can help promote local blood circulation and thereby alleviate the discomfort.
3. Medication
If symptoms are severe and the above measures do not provide significant relief, medications that suppress gastric acid secretion may be used under a doctor’s guidance. Commonly used drugs include rabeprazole and omeprazole. If diarrhea is severe, antidiarrheal medications such as smectite powder or compound diphenoxylate may be added.
