Introduction
There is no definitive answer regarding which remedy works best for泡脚 (soaking feet) in gout patients. The feet are the body's distal extremities, where blood circulation tends to be slower. Soaking feet daily in warm water can generally promote blood circulation and facilitate venous return. For gout patients, soaking feet with Panax notoginseng (Sanqi), safflower (Honghua), or Atractylodes (Cangzhu) may yield better results. However, during an acute gout attack, it is not recommended to soak feet in hot water.

There is no definitive answer regarding the best method for foot soaking in individuals without gout. The feet are the distal ends of the body where blood circulation tends to be slower. Soaking feet daily in warm water can help promote blood circulation and facilitate venous return. However, for patients with gout, soaking feet in solutions containing pseudo-ginseng (Sanqi), safflower, or atractylodes may be more beneficial.

1. Pseudo-ginseng (Sanqi)

Gout is a condition caused by disordered purine metabolism in the body, leading to symptoms such as joint pain and discomfort. Pseudo-ginseng has a sweet and slightly bitter taste and a warm nature. It is commonly used for trauma, bruising, and swelling due to blood stasis, and it functions to invigorate blood circulation, relieve pain, resolve stasis, and stop bleeding. Gout patients often experience redness, swelling, heat, and pain in the joints. Soaking feet with pseudo-ginseng may improve blood flow and thereby accelerate recovery.

2. Safflower

Safflower has a pungent taste and warm nature, and exerts effects of removing blood stasis, relieving pain, promoting blood circulation, and regulating menstruation. It is used to treat conditions such as painful swelling due to blood stasis and dysmenorrhea. The safflower yellow pigment it contains has analgesic and sedative effects on the central nervous system. Therefore, soaking feet with safflower can help alleviate gout symptoms.

3. Atractylodes

Atractylodes is a commonly used traditional Chinese herb clinically prescribed for dampness-resolving purposes. It has a pungent and bitter taste and a warm nature, affecting the spleen, stomach, and liver meridians. Atractylodes functions to dry dampness, strengthen the spleen, dispel wind and dampness, release the exterior, and improve vision. For gout patients, soaking feet with atractylodes can help dispel wind and cold.

However, during an acute gout attack, soaking feet in hot water is not recommended, as it may cause vasodilation and potentially worsen both the condition and pain.
