Introduction
Alcohol may interact with certain components of traditional Chinese medicine, destroying the active ingredients and thereby reducing the medication's effectiveness. As a result, even when taking Chinese medicine on time and in the prescribed dosage, alcohol consumption could still delay the recovery process. Moreover, both traditional Chinese medicine and alcohol require metabolism by the liver. Drinking alcohol during treatment with Chinese medicine may increase the liver's workload and slow down drug metabolism.

In general, it is not recommended to consume alcohol while taking traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The specific reasons are as follows:

Alcohol may interact with certain components in TCM, potentially degrading the active ingredients and reducing the medication's effectiveness. Even when taken correctly according to dosage and schedule, the therapeutic effects of TCM might be compromised by alcohol, thereby delaying recovery. Additionally, both TCM and alcohol are metabolized through the liver. Drinking alcohol during TCM treatment may increase the liver’s workload, slow down drug metabolism, and impair the excretion and clearance of medications, which is detrimental to overall health. Therefore, alcohol consumption should be avoided when taking TCM.

During treatment and recovery, patients are advised to take TCM under the guidance of a healthcare provider and avoid foods that may interfere with the medication to ensure safety. At the same time, dietary adjustments are recommended—focusing on light, easily digestible foods and avoiding overly spicy or greasy meals—to support and promote recovery.
