Why does scratching the inner thigh make the itching worse?
Itching on the inner thighs often worsens with scratching and may be caused by tinea cruris (jock itch). Poor personal hygiene and fungal infection are common contributing factors to the development of tinea cruris. For treatment, it is essential first to maintain cleanliness and dryness of the affected skin area—daily cleansing is recommended. In severe cases, patients should consult a dermatologist at a reputable hospital for proper evaluation and diagnosis, followed by medication tailored to the individual’s condition.

In daily life, maintaining good skin hygiene is crucial. Avoid excessively spicy foods, and ensure timely cleaning of the affected area. Additionally, urticaria (hives) can also cause intense itching on the inner thighs. If urticaria is suspected, identifying and addressing the underlying cause is essential—self-medicating indiscriminately may exacerbate symptoms.
Treatment begins with prompt identification and removal of the causative factor. If infection is responsible, active treatment of the infectious focus is required. If the condition is allergy-related, re-exposure to the allergen must be avoided. For alcohol-induced urticaria, abstinence from alcohol is necessary.

If the urticaria is triggered by excessive consumption of foods rich in heterologous proteins—such as beef, mutton, shrimp, crab, or scallops—these foods must be strictly avoided. Therefore, avoiding known allergens is paramount in managing urticaria. Antihistamines may be used to alleviate symptoms. In severe cases, systemic glucocorticoids may be added to the treatment regimen.
