Introduction
Itching in the throat and coughing often indicate pharyngitis—i.e., an upper respiratory tract infection. Because the ears are connected to the throat via the Eustachian (auditory) tube, inflammation may spread to the ears, causing ear itching as well. Anti-inflammatory medications are required for treatment. In the early stage of coughing, the infection is typically viral; thus, antiviral anti-inflammatory drugs may be used to alleviate symptoms.

Anti-inflammatory medications are required for treatment. In the early stage of cough, the infection is typically viral; antiviral anti-inflammatory agents may be used to alleviate symptoms. If a secondary bacterial infection develops—evidenced by purulent exudate in the pharynx or ears, along with elevated white blood cell count—oral antibiotics are indicated.

If oral medication proves ineffective, intravenous antibiotic therapy—such as ceftriaxone or azithromycin—may be necessary. Additionally, if coughing is severe, antitussive medications should also be administered.
