Introduction
Blackheads commonly occur in oily skin, so excess sebum must be thoroughly cleansed. Inadequate cleansing can easily lead to blackhead inflammation and progression into acne. Use a plant-based facial cleanser with strong cleansing and effective oil-control properties—twice daily, morning and evening. Additionally, after lunch, ensure thorough cleaning around the lips.

Closed comedones are a type of acne and represent a skin condition that can significantly impact both skin health and appearance. Since incomplete makeup removal is a primary cause of closed comedones, addressing this issue begins with thorough skin cleansing. Additional treatment options include facial steaming, saline solution application, or pharmacological interventions.

Effective Home Remedies for Removing Closed Comedones

Cleansing

Comedones commonly occur in oily skin types; therefore, excess sebum must be thoroughly removed. Inadequate cleansing may lead to inflammation and progression into inflammatory acne (pimples). Use a plant-based facial cleanser with strong cleansing and oil-control properties—apply twice daily (morning and evening). Additionally, clean the lip area after lunch.

Facial Steaming

Fill a large basin halfway with hot water. Hold your breath and position your face over the basin opening, sealing the perimeter with a damp towel to trap steam. Repeat this steam treatment several times, then rinse your face with lukewarm water. Perform this procedure 2–3 times per week to maintain clear, unobstructed pores. Immediately after steaming, apply a toner to hydrate, cleanse, and tighten pores—this helps reduce blackheads and comedones while absorbing excess sebum, leaving skin fresh and radiant.

Saline Solution

Saline solution possesses anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, helping to suppress comedone formation—particularly effective in early-stage cases. Apply a 15-gram saline solution to affected areas once or twice daily; noticeable suppression of comedone development typically occurs within 2–3 days. However, excessive salt concentration may cause skin dehydration or exacerbate irritation; thus, use with caution.

Pharmacological Treatment

For moderate-to-severe comedones, topical medications may be indicated—for example, retinoid agents such as adapalene gel, which generally require continuous use for 1–3 months before visible improvement. Alternatively, topical antibiotics (e.g., clindamycin) or antimicrobial agents like benzoyl peroxide may be prescribed for microbial control.

The above methods are all proven effective for treating closed comedones. However, pharmacological treatment is not recommended for mild cases, as simple home remedies are often sufficient to resolve minor closed comedones.
