Introduction
In the same individual, the left and right ovaries are not symmetrical, with the left ovary typically larger than the right. In adults, the average length of the left ovary is 2.93 cm, compared to 2.88 cm for the right ovary; the average width is 1.48 cm on the left versus 1.38 cm on the right; and the average thickness is 0.82 cm on the left and 0.83 cm on the right. The weight of each ovary is approximately 3–4 g.

Many young women, under excessive work-related stress, experience prolonged mental tension and irregular lifestyles, which can adversely affect ovarian health. In severe cases, this may lead to premature ovarian insufficiency (POI). The ovaries are the site of oocyte production and serve as the foundation for female reproductive and fertility health. Therefore, paying attention to ovarian health is essential for a comprehensive understanding of women’s overall physical well-being. But what is the normal size of the ovaries?

Normal Ovarian Size Reference Values in Women

In the same individual, the left and right ovaries are not identical in size—typically, the left ovary is slightly larger than the right. In adult women, the average length of the left ovary is 2.93 cm, compared with 2.88 cm on the right; the average width is 1.48 cm on the left versus 1.38 cm on the right; and the average thickness is 0.82 cm on the left and 0.83 cm on the right. The average weight of each ovary is 3–4 g. Starting at age 35–45, the ovaries gradually decrease in size; by menopause, they may shrink to approximately half their original volume. Generally, an adult ovary is about the size of one’s own thumb tip. Repeated ovulation leads to follicular rupture and atrophy, which are subsequently replaced by connective tissue—causing the ovarian parenchyma to progressively harden over time.

How to Enhance Ovarian Function

Actively treat underlying conditions causing diminished ovarian function. The etiology of ovarian dysfunction is often complex and may include hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, endometriosis, or even malignant ovarian tumors—all of which can impair normal ovarian function. Addressing the primary disease is crucial for effectively improving ovarian function.

Maintaining a positive emotional state can significantly improve diminished ovarian function. It is important to identify healthy outlets for releasing negative emotions, avoid psychological stressors and adverse external influences, and consciously regulate feelings of tension and suppression—thereby supporting optimal ovarian function.

Regular physical exercise helps regulate ovarian function. Sedentary behavior over extended periods may contribute to diminished ovarian function.

We hope the above information is helpful to you. Wishing you a joyful and healthy life!
