What Causes Chin Muscle Cramps, and What Should You Do?
Muscle cramps—many people have experienced leg cramps, which can be quite uncomfortable. However, jaw cramps are rarely mentioned. Yet rarity does not mean impossibility; so what causes jaw cramps?

What Causes Jaw Cramps—and What Should You Do?
Jaw cramps can arise from various causes, primarily including abnormal nerve discharges in the jaw region and jaw muscle fatigue.
Abnormal nerve discharge in the jaw: Abnormal electrical activity in the jaw nerves may lead to localized numbness in the jaw area, sometimes accompanied by mild focal seizures. Prompt medical evaluation is essential to determine whether jaw dystonia (a movement disorder affecting the jaw muscles) is present. Jaw dystonia often manifests as involuntary twitching or pulling at the corner of the mouth. Under a physician’s guidance, neurotrophic medications—such as mecobalamin and vitamin B₂—may be prescribed for treatment.
Jaw muscle fatigue: This typically results from prolonged talking or chewing excessively hard foods, leading to localized muscle fatigue and twitching. In most cases, this is benign and requires no special concern. Applying warm compresses may help alleviate symptoms, with noticeable improvement usually occurring after two to three applications.
Patients should adopt a light, easily digestible diet in daily life—for example, millet porridge or eight-treasure porridge—and consume ample fresh vegetables and fruits, such as spinach and oranges. Hard or tough foods should be minimized to prevent triggering discomfort.
