Introduction
First, apply ice to the painful area—using an ice pack, cold towel, or similar—to induce vasoconstriction in the head’s blood vessels, thereby alleviating pain. Second, lie down and rest. If possible, during a headache, choose a quiet, dimly lit room for a short rest.

Postpartum women aim to recover physically as quickly as possible and avoid postpartum complications. In addition to avoiding cold water, they must also protect themselves from drafts—especially around the head—as exposure to wind may easily trigger postpartum headaches. So, what should be done if postpartum headache is severe?

What to Do for Severe Postpartum Headache

1. Apply cold compresses to the painful area—using an ice pack or a cold towel—to constrict blood vessels in the head and thereby reduce pain.

2. Lie down and rest. If possible, choose a quiet, dimly lit room to rest during headache episodes.

3. Massage the head. This is a common and effective method for relieving headache. Focus primarily on the temples: gently press with your fingertips or use your fists to perform circular motions over the temples and hairline.

4. Drink some green tea. Green tea contains compounds that may help alleviate headache. However, breastfeeding mothers should consume it sparingly to avoid potential effects on the infant.

5. Practice mindful meditation at home—a simple yet effective approach for headache relief. Postpartum women may consider purchasing soothing, relaxing music CDs; during headache episodes, listen to calming music while meditating—or practice yoga—to gradually ease discomfort and distract from the pain.

If headaches persist despite trying the above measures, pharmacological interventions may be considered: Western analgesics for immediate pain relief, or Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) approaches—including tonifying Qi and blood, promoting blood circulation, unblocking meridians, warming the channels, and dispelling cold—to address underlying imbalances.
