Introduction
Urethritis is a relatively common urinary tract infection that can affect both males and females, particularly when their immune function is compromised. Affected individuals often experience symptoms such as dysuria (painful urination), urinary urgency, and a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying. Without timely treatment, urethritis may lead to other complications.

Urethritis is a relatively common urinary tract infection that can affect both men and women, especially when their immune function is compromised. Affected individuals often experience symptoms such as painful urination (dysuria), urgency, and a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying. Without timely treatment, urethritis may lead to other complications. So, how is urethritis treated?

How to Treat Urethritis

Patients with urethritis should seek evaluation in the urology department or emergency department. Diagnostic workup typically includes urinalysis, procalcitonin testing, color Doppler ultrasound of the urinary system, and urine culture. The following treatments are commonly recommended:

First, patients should maintain regular fluid intake and voiding schedules. Alcohol—especially baijiu (Chinese白酒)—should be avoided. Daily urine output should be maintained at over 2,000 mL. Patients should also ensure adequate sleep and avoid spicy or irritating foods.

Second, for severe urinary irritation symptoms, regular analgesics may be prescribed.

Third, systemic anti-inflammatory (antibiotic) therapy is recommended, typically guided by a physician. Cephalosporins are frequently selected.

Both acute and chronic urethritis patients should consistently drink ample fluids and urinate promptly upon feeling the urge. Maintaining a daily urine output exceeding two liters helps flush bacteria from the urinary tract, dilutes urine, and reduces its irritant effect on inflamed tissues—thereby promoting resolution of inflammation. During this period, patients may also apply warm compresses to the lower abdomen to improve local blood circulation and facilitate absorption of inflammation.

We hope the above information is helpful. Wishing you good health and happiness!
