What ointment should be applied for urticaria (hives)?
For urticaria (hives), topical application of compound diphenhydramine and crotamiton cream or topical corticosteroid creams may be used for treatment.
1. Compound diphenhydramine and crotamiton cream: This is a cooling, antipruritic agent indicated for the treatment of urticarial papules. Patients should apply this cream topically under medical supervision, adjusting the dosage according to the extent and severity of skin lesions. Avoid contact with lips or mucosal surfaces when using this product.
2. Mometasone furoate cream: A synthetic corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory and antiallergic properties. Mometasone furoate is not recommended for facial use, as prolonged application may lead to corticosteroid-dependent dermatitis of the face. It should also not be applied over large body surface areas. If prescribed for urticaria, its use must be guided by a physician.
3. Fluticasone propionate cream: A topical corticosteroid with localized anti-inflammatory activity, which also demonstrates therapeutic efficacy against urticarial lesions.
Additionally, patients with urticaria should avoid scratching affected skin areas, as this may exacerbate inflammation. A light, bland diet is recommended; spicy, pungent, or greasy foods—such as scallions, ginger, and garlic—should be avoided to prevent symptom aggravation.
