Introduction
The causes of hand eczema include environmental and psychological factors. Hand eczema is often associated with substances that come into direct contact with the hands—such as common cleansing agents like soap and hand wash, dishwashing detergents, laundry detergents, and disinfectants used during household chores. These ingredients can trigger allergic skin reactions and are most frequently observed in women who perform domestic tasks; thus, hand eczema is also commonly referred to as “housewife’s hand.”

Some middle-aged and older women experience a gradual decline in immune function as they age, which may lead to various comorbidities—including hand eczema.

What Causes Hand Eczema?

Hand eczema arises from multiple factors, including environmental and psychological influences. It is often linked to substances that come into direct contact with the hands—such as common soaps, hand washes, dishwashing detergents, laundry detergents, and disinfectants used during household chores. These agents can trigger allergic or irritant skin reactions, particularly among women who frequently perform domestic tasks; hence, hand eczema is colloquially termed “housewife’s hand.”

Certain occupations—such as hairdressing, cosmetology, and cooking—also carry an increased risk of developing hand eczema. Once hand eczema appears, it is essential to minimize exposure to cleaning agents and chemicals. Wearing protective gloves while doing housework is strongly recommended. Additionally, avoid excessive hand washing; after washing, apply a moisturizer regularly. Topical treatments—including corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors—may also be used under medical guidance.

The symptoms of hand eczema can be described in two categories: subjective and objective. Subjective symptoms primarily include itching, which may prompt scratching—potentially leading to secondary infection and small fissures in the skin, accompanied by pain. Objective symptoms refer to visible skin manifestations (i.e., the rash itself). We hope this information proves helpful!
