Introduction
Patients experiencing dizziness and vomiting should receive treatment targeting the underlying cause. If these symptoms occur after prolonged outdoor activity during hot weather, heatstroke may be suspected. Follow your physician’s instructions to take Qingzheng Qi Shui (a traditional Chinese medicine for mild heatstroke) and consume foods rich in vitamin C; rest as much as possible. If dizziness and vomiting worsen with physical activity, vertigo may be the likely cause.

Dizziness and nausea are symptoms that may arise from numerous clinical conditions. So, what medications should be taken for dizziness, vertigo, and vomiting?

What medications should be taken for dizziness, vertigo, and vomiting?

When experiencing dizziness and vomiting, treatment should target the underlying cause. If symptoms occur after prolonged outdoor activity during hot weather, heat exhaustion may be suspected. In such cases, follow your physician’s instructions to take Qingqi Zhengqi Water (a traditional Chinese medicine preparation), consume foods rich in vitamin C, and rest adequately. If dizziness and vomiting worsen with physical activity, vestibular dysfunction (e.g., vertigo) may be involved. Treatment options may include intravenous infusions of statins (e.g., atorvastatin), ephedrine, or other agents—though this requires careful clinical evaluation and prescription.

Marked headache, coughing or choking while drinking water, or accompanying unilateral limb numbness or weakness may suggest cerebral infarction or other neurological disorders. Diagnostic evaluations—including head CT, blood pressure measurement, and cervical spine CT—are recommended. For confirmed cerebral infarction, intravenous therapy with thrombolytic or neuroprotective agents—such as Xueshuantong, Yinxiangdamo (Ginkgo biloba extract combined with dipyridamole), or edaravone—is typically required.

If dizziness and vomiting result from hypertension, antihypertensive medications—such as amlodipine besylate, benazepril, or irbesartan—should be selected to control blood pressure and alleviate symptoms. When symptoms stem from insufficient cerebral arterial perfusion, cerebrovascular vasodilators—including flunarizine, nimodipine, or nifedipine—may be prescribed. If dizziness and vomiting are caused by peripheral vestibular disorders, anti-vertigo and sedative medications are indicated. Commonly used agents include Qiangli Fangxuan Capsules, betahistine, and estazolam. We hope this article has been helpful. Wishing you a joyful life and good health!
