Introduction
Experiencing nausea and diarrhea after drinking alcohol warrants consuming appropriate liquid or semi-liquid foods—preferably plain wheat congee (a thin rice porridge). If plain wheat congee is unavailable, other mild, easily digestible porridges may serve as suitable alternatives. When consuming porridge, avoid overly thick consistency and refrain from drinking large quantities at once. Additionally, individuals suffering from alcohol-induced nausea and diarrhea should consider drinking an appropriate amount of celery juice, as it is rich in B-complex vitamins.

If vomiting occurs due to alcohol intoxication, the body loses substantial amounts of electrolytes and water. At this time, it is advisable to consume protein-rich foods and replenish fluids promptly. Suitable options include meat, eggs, and yogurt.

What to Eat After Alcohol-Induced Nausea and Diarrhea

When experiencing nausea and diarrhea after drinking, opt for light, easily digestible liquid foods—ideally plain wheat congee (rice porridge). If plain wheat congee is unavailable, other mild congees or broths may serve as alternatives. Avoid overly thick or viscous congee, and do not consume large quantities at once. Additionally, drinking celery juice in moderation can be beneficial, as it is rich in B-complex vitamins, which help metabolize alcohol and mitigate its irritating effects on the gastrointestinal tract, thereby alleviating discomfort.

Excessive alcohol consumption can damage the gastrointestinal mucosa, leading to symptoms such as abdominal discomfort. Drinking a moderate amount of milk may help protect the gastric mucosa. Similarly, consuming a small quantity of milk before drinking may provide preemptive mucosal protection, reducing the risk of post-alcohol gastrointestinal distress.

Alcohol-induced vomiting and diarrhea result from alcohol’s irritation of the gastrointestinal mucosa. It is recommended—under a physician’s guidance—to take oral norfloxacin (Fupai’an) to alleviate symptoms, and to drink lightly salted water to maintain hydration and prevent dehydration. For patients experiencing vomiting, combining treatment with a gastric mucosal protective agent is advised. During recovery, avoid hard, coarse, or raw foods.
