Numerous carbonated beverages are currently available on the market, many of which are marketed as “weakly alkaline” and packaged as healthy drinking water. Many people believe that consuming carbonated drinks can lower uric acid levels and thus drink large quantities daily in an attempt to improve their condition. So, is drinking soda water beneficial for individuals with hyperuricemia?

Is Soda Water Beneficial for Hyperuricemia?

Yes, drinking soda water offers certain benefits for individuals with elevated uric acid levels. Uric acid is the end product of purine metabolism, primarily generated through enzymatic breakdown of nucleic acids, other intracellular purine compounds, and dietary purines. The active ingredient in soda water is sodium bicarbonate, which alkalinizes urine—raising its pH and increasing uric acid solubility—thereby facilitating urinary excretion of uric acid.

Soda water helps alkalinize urine, reducing the likelihood of uric acid accumulation and crystal formation within the urinary tract, thereby promoting uric acid excretion and exerting a modest uric acid–lowering effect. However, long-term consumption of high-concentration soda water may lead to metabolic alkalosis and edema secondary to excessive sodium bicarbonate load. Therefore, patients with hyperuricemia may consume soda water in moderation. Generally, it is recommended to drink more than 250 mL but no more than 500 mL per day. High-concentration carbonated beverages should not be consumed chronically, nor should soda water be relied upon as primary treatment. Rather, it should serve only as an adjunctive measure alongside standard medical therapy.
