Gout is a metabolic disorder characterized by a group of conditions caused by disordered purine metabolism and consequent elevation of serum uric acid levels. Clinically, it may manifest as hyperuricemia, episodic and chronic arthritis, tophi formation, and gouty nephropathy.

Gout patients may develop acute knee arthritis, typically accompanied by swelling, localized joint effusion, and resulting functional impairment with restricted mobility. Gout is a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated serum uric acid levels due to purine metabolism abnormalities.


Clinically, gout manifests as hyperuricemia, episodic and chronic arthritis, tophi formation, and gouty nephropathy. Acute gouty arthritis often has a sudden onset, frequently occurring at night, with excruciating pain. Affected joints rapidly become red, swollen, warm, and tender. During intercritical periods, patients are asymptomatic. The most commonly affected joint is the first metatarsophalangeal joint (big toe), while other frequently involved sites include the dorsum of the foot, ankle, knee, fingers, and wrists.

Management of gout begins with dietary modifications—avoiding high-purine foods such as organ meats, seafood, rich broths, and beer. Patients should increase fluid intake, aiming for over 2,000 mL of water per day, and regularly monitor serum uric acid levels.
