Why Should Tooth Extraction Be Avoided During Menstruation?
Tooth extraction is an invasive surgical procedure, and female patients should ideally avoid having teeth extracted during their menstrual period—especially for complex extractions. There are three main concerns:
First, tooth extraction during menstruation increases the risk of bleeding. During this period, the body’s coagulation system is activated and vascular fragility is heightened, resulting in a greater tendency to bleed compared to other times.
Second, the risk of infection is elevated. Immunity is generally reduced during menstruation, and tooth extraction is a contaminated procedure; the oral cavity is a naturally bacterially colonized environment. Under these conditions, the likelihood of post-extraction infection significantly increases.
Third, women often experience heightened tactile sensitivity during menstruation, making them more susceptible to pain both during and after the extraction.
