What should I do if my navel itches?
Disease description:
My navel has been itchy for the past two days. What should I do about an itchy navel?
Itching around the patient’s umbilicus is typically associated with local allergic reactions or infection. Recommendations: The patient may cleanse the affected area with normal saline or calamine lotion to alleviate discomfort. If the itching is allergy-related, topical antiallergic agents—such as dexamethasone or diphenhydramine—may be applied. Alternatively, the condition could represent neurodermatitis or prurigo (a neurogenic pruritic disorder), both of which fall under the category of neurofunctional disorders; in such cases, low-dose sedatives/anxiolytics, antihistamines, and B-complex vitamins may be prescribed.
