What Causes Excessive Fetal Movement?
Disease description:
I am now 38 weeks pregnant, and today I’ve noticed unusually frequent fetal movements—what could be causing this?
Excessively frequent fetal movements may occur when the fetus is relatively small and the pregnant woman has an increased volume of amniotic fluid, providing more space for fetal movement within the uterus. This is generally considered a normal phenomenon, provided the fetal movements remain regular. However, if fetal movements become unusually frequent and are subsequently followed by a progressive decrease—or even cessation—of movements, this may indicate early intrauterine fetal hypoxia, which can initially manifest as increased fetal activity. In such cases, prompt medical evaluation at a hospital is essential.
