Can people with gout eat pineapple?
Disease description:
I love eating pineapples in summer, but I’ve had a gout flare-up these past few days and am unsure whether I can still eat them. Doctor, is it safe for people with gout to eat pineapple?
Gout patients can eat pineapple, but only in moderation. Although pineapple is rich in nutrients—such as various vitamins and minerals (e.g., selenium, calcium, and phosphorus), as well as some protein and dietary fiber—it also contains high levels of fructose and glucose. Fructose and glucose contribute to increased uric acid production in the body; therefore, gout patients should consume pineapple sparingly. Pineapple aids protein digestion and promotes gastrointestinal motility. Thus, for patients with poor appetite, small amounts of pineapple may help stimulate appetite, regulate qi flow, and alleviate greasiness.
