What are the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)?
Disease description:
After eating, I always have hiccups and feel acidic fluid coming up, along with an irritated, uncomfortable sensation in my throat. I'm not sure if these symptoms are caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). What are the symptoms of GERD?
Symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) include chest pain, difficulty swallowing, and a burning sensation in the upper abdomen. When refluxed material irritates the sensory nerve endings of the esophageal epithelium, it causes a burning sensation behind the breastbone. If left uncontrolled, this burning sensation may spread to the throat, typically occurring about an hour after meals. Additionally, extra-esophageal irritation symptoms may occur, such as hoarseness upon waking, persistent coughing, and nighttime asthma attacks.
