Whether a woman with uterine fibroids can use the Mirena IUD depends on the size and location of the fibroids. If the fibroid is small and located within the uterine muscle wall (intramural), it is generally acceptable to insert the Mirena IUD. However, if the fibroid is large or is a submucosal fibroid (located just under the uterine lining), insertion of the Mirena IUD is not recommended until appropriate treatment has been completed.
