Women with uterine fibroids can usually use an IUD, but if the fibroid is submucosal, an IUD should not be used. If the fibroid is submucosal or the uterus is significantly enlarged, an intrauterine device is not recommended. This is because it may increase bleeding caused by submucosal fibroids, and the IUD may become unstable within the uterine cavity and be expelled along with menstrual flow.
