How is hyperopia (farsightedness) in children treated?
Disease description:
My son is currently in the third grade of elementary school. Recently, he mentioned that he has difficulty seeing books clearly. Since most people around him have myopia, we were surprised when the hospital examination revealed that he actually has hyperopia. Could you please advise how hyperopia in children is treated?
Hello, the management approach depends on the child’s age and the degree of hyperopia. In young children, a mild degree of hyperopia (e.g., +1.00 to +2.00 D) is often physiological—meaning it is part of normal visual development—and typically requires no intervention. As the child grows, this physiological hyperopia usually decreases and resolves spontaneously. However, if the hyperopia is significant and the child is over seven years old—beyond the age when physiological hyperopia normally resolves—corrective glasses are necessary to prevent refractive amblyopia. We hope this information is helpful. Wishing you good health!
