Disease description:

My neighbor's child was diagnosed with anal fistula shortly after birth. The doctor said it might heal on its own. Do most infant anal fistulas resolve spontaneously?

Doctor's answer (1)
Dr. Li Jingxiang
Infant anal fistulas generally do not heal on their own. Although some believe that in newborns with mild or asymptomatic cases, inflammation may temporarily subside and the fistula opening may temporarily close through local antibiotic use and warm sitz baths, the likelihood of spontaneous healing remains relatively low. Anal fistulas are primarily caused by recurrent infections around the anus or perianal abscesses, representing irreversible damage. Without timely treatment, complications such as anal itching, perianal eczema, and anal abscesses may develop. Parents are advised to seek prompt medical attention if they notice symptoms of an anal fistula in their infant and to follow the doctor's recommendations for treatment to prevent disease progression.
