Can people with high uric acid levels drink whiskey?
Disease description:
I usually enjoy drinking alcohol, especially whiskey. However, during a recent checkup, I was told that my uric acid levels are high. I would like to ask, is it okay to drink whiskey if I have high uric acid?

Patients with high uric acid levels are not advised to drink whiskey, mainly for the following reasons:
1. Alcohol effects: Whiskey is an alcoholic beverage. Alcohol accelerates the liver's breakdown of adenosine triphosphate, which may lead to increased uric acid levels in the body. Additionally, after alcohol enters the body, it causes continuous accumulation of lactic acid and ketone bodies. These substances compete with uric acid for excretion, reducing the amount of uric acid excreted and causing uric acid to accumulate in the body, thus worsening the condition.
2. Purine content: Although whiskey does not directly contain large amounts of purines, alcohol consumption may affect purine metabolism in the body, indirectly leading to increased uric acid production.
3. Kidney burden: Patients with high uric acid levels may have impaired kidney function. The alcohol and other components in whiskey need to be metabolized by the kidneys, which may increase the kidney workload and further damage kidney function.
4. Disease induction: Long-term consumption of alcoholic beverages such as whiskey may induce diseases such as acute arthritis and gouty tophi, which are particularly detrimental to patients with high uric acid levels.
