What symptoms may appear in the feet of people with high uric acid levels?
Recently, I had high uric acid levels and experienced redness, swelling, heat, and pain in my foot. I would like to ask, what other symptoms might occur in the foot?
Elevated uric acid levels can lead to the formation and deposition of urate crystals in the joints and surrounding tissues, triggering gout. The initial symptoms of gouty arthritis commonly appear in the joints of the lower limbs.
1. Redness, swelling, heat, and pain: High uric acid levels may cause redness, swelling, heat, and pain in the foot joints, particularly noticeable at night or in the early morning. Pain may be accompanied by joint stiffness and restricted movement.
2. Asymmetric joint tenderness: Particularly at the first metatarsophalangeal joint, redness and tenderness may develop, often presenting asymmetrically.
3. Athlete's foot: Patients with high uric acid levels are also prone to fungal infections, leading to tinea pedis (athlete's foot), characterized by symptoms such as blisters, swelling, scaling, and foot odor.
4. As the disease progresses, gout may affect other joints, such as the ankle and knee joints. In severe cases, tophi (deposits of urate crystals under the skin) may develop, presenting as subcutaneous nodules.
In addition, long-term hyperuricemia can damage the kidneys, causing uric acid nephropathy, manifested as hematuria, proteinuria, and other symptoms. Therefore, for patients with elevated uric acid levels, timely medical attention is crucial once the above symptoms appear.
