How should pubic lice be treated?
Disease description:
I felt itching in my genital area a few days ago and went to the hospital, where I was diagnosed with pubic lice. How should pubic lice be treated?
Pubic lice is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the parasitic insect *Pthirus pubis*, which infests pubic hair and other coarse body hair, leading to intense itching and skin inflammation. Treatment typically involves the use of pediculicides (lice-killing medications). Common treatment options include medicated shampoos or creams containing insecticidal agents—such as pyrethrins with piperonyl butoxide or products containing peppermint oil. During treatment, the affected areas must be thoroughly cleaned, and medications should be applied strictly according to the product instructions or as directed by a healthcare provider. Because lice eggs (nits) may adhere to clothing and bedding, these items should be washed in hot water and the living environment thoroughly cleaned. Sexual partners must also undergo examination and concurrent treatment to prevent reinfection. Additionally, patients should abstain from sexual activity until both they and their partners have completed treatment and are fully cured.
