Why does it hurt when I blink?
Disease description:
I’ve been experiencing pain when blinking over the past two days—why does it hurt every time I blink?
Pain upon blinking can be caused by various factors:
1. Eye fatigue is a common cause. Prolonged screen time or reading forces the eyes to constantly adjust focus, leading to fatigue and discomfort.
2. Dry eye syndrome may also cause pain during blinking due to insufficient tear film lubrication, resulting in increased friction and irritation with each blink.
3. Ocular infections—such as conjunctivitis or keratitis—can likewise trigger pain upon blinking, as inflammation causes conjunctival hyperemia and corneal or periocular edema, making blinking painful.
4. Eye injury or foreign body entry into the eye may also result in pain during blinking.
Therefore, if you experience pain when blinking, it is advisable to rest your eyes promptly and avoid prolonged visual tasks. Should symptoms persist or worsen, seek timely medical evaluation to identify the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.
