What Are the Symptoms of Pinworm Infection in Adults?
Disease description:
My whole body feels like insects are crawling on it, and I also have headaches and fatigue. The doctor diagnosed me with a pinworm infection. What are the symptoms of pinworm infection in adults?
Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm) is a type of parasitic worm. These parasites are small in size and capable of secreting toxins. In adults infected with pinworms, intense perianal itching is commonly experienced—particularly worsening at night—and adult worms may even be observed migrating out of the anus. Pinworm infection is typically caused by poor hygiene practices, especially related to food handling and personal sanitation. The consequences of infection can be significant: affected individuals may develop malnutrition and anemia, and in some cases, complications such as appendicitis or peritonitis may occur.
